Harry Brook: Ben Stokes has returned to playing in one-day international cricket, resulting in the omission of 24-year-old Harry Brook from England’s preliminary World Cup squad for the upcoming tournament. Now, after a while, the star batter has finally opened up about his omission.
His undeniable talent has been demonstrated on the international stage, particularly in the realm of red-ball cricket, showcasing his remarkable abilities when he’s performing at his best. As a result, his unexpected exclusion from England’s initial 15-member squad for the forthcoming ODI World Cup in India was met with astonishment from both cricket enthusiasts and former players.
What did Harry Brook say on his exclusion?
Speaking on his exclusion, Harry said, “Obviously it’s disappointing but I can’t do anything about it now. You’ve just got to move on. I’m trying not to think about it anymore.” Although Harry Brook had limited experience in the 50-over format, numerous supporters believed he should be included in the squad. Nevertheless, the English management held a different perspective. They successfully persuaded Ben Stokes to reconsider his retirement choice and managed to secure his place within the squad.
Speaking on Stokes’ inclusion, Harry said, “I’ve not had much conversation with Matthew [Mott] or Jos [Buttler]. They said with Stokesy coming back I was probably going to miss out this time. He is one of the best players to ever play cricket, so I can’t really complain, can I?”
Harry Brook’s records in limited-over cricket
Having participated in a mere three ODIs, the 24-year-old accumulated a total of 86 runs, maintaining an average of 28.67 and a strike rate of 98.85. The sample size is insufficient to form a definitive assessment of his prowess as a one-day player, primarily due to the limited exposure. Additionally, his involvement in domestic 50-over matches is notably sparse, with his most recent appearance dating back to 2019 while playing for Yorkshire.
Furthermore, Harry Brook’s performance in the 2023 IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad was rather lackluster. Although he started the season with a century, his form gradually declined as the tournament progressed. He could only muster 190 runs at an average of 21.11. His difficulties in dealing with spin on surfaces that are slower than what he typically encounters in England were quite apparent. It’s worth noting that he would have been encountering similar pitch conditions during the World Cup.
