Shubman Gill: It was quite a shock to see Gill not getting selected for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 squad. While all the favorites were getting selected, Gill was silently sidelined to reserves and no one batted an eye.
After scoring almost 900 runs in the previous IPL and scoring 300* in this one, it was a hard choice to pass on the Gujarat skipper. But it is also true that only 15 players can be selected in a squad and someone’s dream had to be crushed.
But after spending almost half a decade at the international level, the Prince is not letting his failures define him anymore. The 24-year-old opened up about his recent struggles when he was in bad form and how cricket was not giving him happiness.
‘I Was Not Happy’
Shubman Gill had an underwhelming 2021-22 season in test cricket. After taking over the world in the previous season, he was only averaging 26.50 and was at an all-time low. He had to readjust his personality at that point to find inner peace.
“Definitely, it felt strange. I felt disconnected from the sport at one point. Even when I was doing well, I wasn’t feeling great. I would feel I had missed out on the last three/four games, that I had to do well in the next four games. And the joy of doing well in that one game was missing. I wasn’t enjoying the good thing,” Gill said.
Shubman Gill New Mentality
He further stated “It has taught me so much. To get out of it, I had to change as a person. I had to detach a part of my personality that was only happy with success in cricket. Ki khush tabhi hounga, jab run ban rahein hain mere.” (that I will only be happy when I score runs).
