ICC ODI World Cup 2023 Final: Australia’s pacer Mitchell Starc responded cheekily to questions about the pitch controversy surrounding the Cricket World Cup semi-final against South Africa. Accusations of the pitch being swapped at the last minute had marred the semi-final between India and New Zealand, leading to concerns about the nature of the pitch for the final in Ahmedabad.
Mitchell Starc’s Cheeky Response on Ahmedabad Pitch Controversy
When asked if he was concerned about the final’s pitch, Starc responded, “I guess we’ll find out when we get to Ahmedabad tomorrow and see if it’s a fresh wicket or an old wicket,” injecting humor into the situation.
Reflecting on the used pitch at the Eden Gardens during the semi-final, Starc acknowledged its challenges, stating, “It was obviously a pretty bare wicket. I’m not sure if it was slightly tougher to start with the bat due to being under covers for some amount of time.” He also highlighted the inconsistencies in pace, making it challenging for batsmen.
Responding to the surprise of playing on a pitch that didn’t showcase the typical one-day game in a high-scoring tournament, Starc admitted, “Yeah, a little bit surprising, but you know sometimes it’s nice to see the ball dominate bat sometimes.” Despite the pitch controversies, Australia secured a narrow victory over South Africa in the semi-final, setting the stage for an intriguing final in Ahmedabad.
