ICC ODI World Cup 2023: India, captained by Rohit Sharma, unveiled their 15-player lineup for the ICC World Cup 2023, which is set to take place at nine different venues from October 5 to November 19. The squad closely resembled the 18-member Asia Cup 2023 roster, with just Tilak Varma, Prasidh Krishna, and travelling reserve Sanju Samson failing to secure spots in the World Cup 2023 squad, resulting in few surprises. However, there are certain Indian stars who will be playing their first ever World Cup this time.
Among the 15 players selected for the prestigious tournament, nine have previously participated in two, three, or even four World Cups, including Virat Kohli. Subsequently, six players will make their ODI World Cup debuts. Virat Kohli is set to make his fourth appearance in a 50-over World Cup, while Rohit Sharma, Mohammed Shami, and Ravindra Jadeja will be participating in their third ODI World Cup. The vice-captain, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, KL Rahul, and Jasprit Bumrah, will make their second appearance in the ODI World Cup.
6 Indian Players who will be playing first ICC World Cup
1. Mohammed Siraj
Mohammed Siraj, in exceptional form this year, has rightfully secured his spot in the squad, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he becomes an immediate selection in the playing eleven. With 46 wickets in 26 ODIs and an impressive economy rate of 4.86, including his best figures of 4 for 32, Siraj has proven himself as a formidable bowler.
2. Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill, the young opener, has been steadily climbing the ranks since his international debut. With over 1900 runs, including six centuries (including a double century) and 10 fifties, and a highest score of 208, in just 35 innings, he boasts an impressive batting average and will be crucial to Men in Blue.
3. Ishan Kishan
The young wicketkeeper-batsman has secured his spot with consistent performances in limited opportunities for the national side. In 17 innings, he has notched up 776 runs, including a double century and seven fifties, achieving a respectable average of 48.50.
4. Suryakumar Yadav
A controversial selection, but he has demonstrated his match-winning capabilities in the T20 format. However, his ODI statistics are less impressive. With 511 runs in 24 innings, including two fifties and a highest score of 64, he has maintained a modest average of 24.33.
5. Shardul Thakur
Referred to as the man with the golden arm, he has consistently delivered by taking crucial wickets and contributing valuable runs during challenging situations. In 40 ODIs, he has claimed 59 wickets at an economy rate of 6.17, with his best bowling figures being 4/37. Additionally, with the bat, he has notched up 318 runs, including an unbeaten half-century, in 24 innings.
6. Shreyas Iyer
A more experienced player in the group, Shreyas is at the top choice for the problematic number 4 position. In his ODI career, he has accumulated 1645 runs, including 2 centuries and 14 half-centuries, with an unbeaten 113 as his highest score.
