ICC ODI World Cup 2023: In the past few years, there has always been a surprise inclusion in the Indian team’s World Cup squad. It was Vijay Shankar in 2019, Stuart Binny in 2015, and Varun Chakraborty in 2021.
When the Indian squad was announced for the upcoming 2023 World Cup, we were relieved of any such surprises this time. The team was picked based on the performances of the past few years and it was a team that everyone expected.
But we are always in for a surprise as an Indian team fans, aren’t we? An injury to Axar Patel in Asia Cup 2023 has resulted in a conundrum. If he does not get fit by the time the World Cup rolls around, we might get a surprise inclusion in the squad once again.
ICC ODI World Cup 2023 Surprise Inclusion
Axar has been performing on the highest level for a while now. So, it was obvious that would be on the team for the upcoming tournament. But his injury and doubts over timely return have given chances to other players.
Washington Sundar and Ravi Ashwin have been called up to the squad against Australia. And if Axar does not get fit by 28 September, one of them will be included in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 squad.
Skipper Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar are hopeful that Axar will return timely. That is why they have not changed the preliminary squad yet. But if he does not get the green light timely, a change is imminent.
The Ashwin Dilemma
It looks like that we will once again go to the ‘Anna’ Route. Ashwin was also a surprise inclusion in the T20 World Cup squad. And the way Rohit Sharma talked about the veteran, it looks like we will get him in the squad once again.
“Ravi Ashwin has played close to 150 ODIs and 100 Tests. If he’s an option for us then he should be in. He might’ve not played this format, but has played good enough cricket.” Rohit Sharma also stated that matches against Australia will be a good test for Ashwin.
