ODI World Cup 2023: The World Cup, which will take place later this year, is being taken into consideration to turn up as a hybrid format by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Pakistan’s matches may end up taking place in Bangladesh, despite the fact that India is the only host country at the moment. Importantly, the announcement follows the announcement that a similar strategy is being examined for the Asia Cup in 2023, which will be hosted by Pakistan, but games involving India may be played at a neutral site due to India’s unwillingness to travel its neighbour.
ODI World Cup 2023 on Hybrid?
Given that India was set to host the World Cup on its own for the first time, this is a significant development. Before to this, however, matches from two Cups—the 1987 and 2011 tournaments—took place on Indian territory, but on both occasions, India shared hosting rights with other countries i.e. with Pakistan in 1987 and Sri Lanka & Bangladesh in 2011.
Even if the hybrid model is approved, there will be a number of logistical difficulties. For instance, while scheduling their group stage matches in Bangladesh might be simpler, it could be challenging to come up with a solution in the scenario that India and Pakistan qualify for a knockout match against one another.
Similar model in talks for Asia Cup 2023
For Asia Cup, Oman, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and England have all surfaced as potential venues for matches of India. In case both teams get to the final, the new tournament structure makes it possible for there to be three India-Pakistan matches. However, this year, it is supposed to be played in ODI format.
