Shubman Gill: Despite a mediocre tour in the Caribbean, Indian batsman Shubman Gill’s impressive half-century during the fourth T20I against the West Indies in Lauderhill, Florida, has propelled him to a career-best 25th position in the ICC Men’s T20I Player Rankings for batters. Gill’s remarkable performance led him to ascend 43 places in the rankings. His scores of 77 and nine in the last two T20Is of the five-match series, which the West Indies clinched 3-2, played a pivotal role in his climb.
Shubman Gill climbs up
Notably, Gill’s prior best ranking in this format was 30th, achieved in February. This ranking followed his extraordinary unbeaten 126 against New Zealand in Ahmedabad, which marked India’s highest score in T20Is. Shubman Gill’s opening partner, Yashasvi Jaiswal, who contributed significantly to their partnership of 165 runs in the fourth match, has also experienced a rapid ascent in the rankings. The left-handed player, who debuted in the third match of the series, surged by over a thousand places, securing the 88th position.
His standout performance as the ‘Player of the Match’ in the fourth T20I, where he scored an unbeaten 84 off 51 deliveries, propelled him to this notable ranking. Nonetheless, both Jaiswal and Gill faced difficulties in providing India with a strong opening in the decisive T20I match at the same location. This proved to be a pivotal factor, as India struggled to achieve what could be described as a competitive T20 total. The visiting team managed to set a score of 165/9, which the West Indies successfully pursued with two overs remaining and eight wickets in hand, ultimately securing victory in the series.
