India, the world’s No. 1 ODI and T20 team, achieved a rare feat, with the ICC website listing them as the world’s No. 1 Test team after their innings and 132-run win over Australia in Nagpur. Before India, South Africa was the only team to achieve the top 1 ranking in the world in men’s cricket across all formats simultaneously. In August 2012, they were successful in achieving this feat.

All media houses covered this news and congratulated Team India for this rare achievement. However a few hours later, the ICC website again listed Australia as the No. 1 Test team in the world, demoting Team India to No. 2. Early updates on the ICC website showed Australia having lost 15 points, a much larger deficit than usual.
ICC Blunder
India appear to gain and lose the No.1 Test ranking on the same day due to a clear ICC blunder. According to the ICC ranking predictor, India will have to beat Australia by a margin of two matches in the four-match series to get the No.1 ranking. It is not going to be easy at all for Team India to be number 1 in all three formats.
England, who are second only to India in the ICC T20I and ODI rankings, will play Bangladesh in both T20Is and ODIs before the end of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, a win for England could see Team India slip from No.1 spot in ODIs and T20Is.
