ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Pakistan ace player Mohammad Rizwan opened up about the 2021 T20 victory over India. It was Pakistan’s first-ever win over India in both formats of the World Cup.
Nonetheless, it was a dominating 10-wicket victory with Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam chasing down the 152 runs target given by India in just 17 overs. Rizwan especially was phenomenal and scored 79 in just 55 deliveries.
Looking back on the win, Rizwan recalled the advice given by former Pakistan Cricket Board’s President Ramiz Raza, and what he told everyone before the match. Rizwan revealed that the President told everyone to win against India no matter what.
‘Beating India Is More Important!’
Rizwan stated “We had never beaten India before that (in a World Cup). Ramiz Raja met us and said, you have to beat India. There was a long time to go for the World Cup when he first came in (as PCB president).
But he had started developing this thought in the team from right then. As we got closer to the World Cup he said, regardless of whether you win the trophy or not, just don’t lose to India. He used to say don’t come under pressure, and then would put pressure on us,”
ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Intense Clash
Looking back to the India Vs Pakistan clash in the 2021 World Cup, Rizwan stated that he did not realize the importance of the match back then. It was after the event that he realized what a burdensome match this is for players.
“For me, it was all a first, whether it be playing in a World Cup or in such a big match. So I was feeling quite normal, I didn’t think this was any different from any other match. But when we won, that is when I realized what we achieved.”
