The South Africa vs Bangladesh match in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 was bombarded with a controversial DRS decision.

ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Another close encounter where the Proteas held their nerves to come out on top against Bangladesh. It is funny that the team known as Chokers has won three close encounters back-to-back.

It was a very intense match, and Bangladesh was on top for most of the match. But just like the previous match of India Vs Pakistan, South Africa turned the tide in the later stages of the match.

South Africa clinched the match by 4 runs but the match had a dark cloud roaming over it. A controversial DRS LBW decision cost Banglades 4 runs which in the end was the deciding factor of the game.

The decision and the rule have been criticized by experts and fans all over the world. And in all fairness, in a close tournament like this, a decision like that can make all the difference.

ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Controversial Decision

The incident happened when the Bangladesh team was in a strong position. They needed 27 runs in 24 deliveries with 6 wickets in hand. That is when Baartman came to bowl the 17th over against Mahmudullah.

On the second delivery, Baartman hit the pads of Mahmudullah which resulted in a huge appeal of LBW. The ball raced towards the boundary and the on-field umpire gave the signal of out.

Mahmuddullah immediately reviewed the decision which showed the ball was missing leg stump. But under current rules, the leg-bye boundary was not given because the umpire had already signaled out.

According to the rules, as soon as the umpire gives the signal of out, the ball is considered dead and no runs will be added even if the decision is overturned. Bangladesh was deprived of those four runs, which in the end was the difference point in the match.

Criticism All Around The World

Bangladesh player Towhid Hridoy lashed out at the umpires over the decision in the post-match interview. He stated “To be honest that was not a good call for us in such a tight match. In my point of view, the umpire gave that out but it was pretty hard on us. Those four runs could have changed the match scenario.”

The criticism was not only limited to Hridou as former Indian player Wasim Jaffer also went on to his social media to criticize the rule.

In the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, where every run matters, the umpiring standards should be higher than ever before. But this kind of lackluster umpiring can cost the game for a team.
