ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Jake Fraser McGurk was a sensation in IPL 2024. He took over the tournament in the blink of an eye and everyone was in awe of him. He was the most destructive opener of the tournament beating players like Travis Head and Sunil Narine.
McGurk also scored more than 90% of his runs in boundaries and he has had a 300+ runs season. In just 9 innings, he scored 330 runs with a strike rate of 234.04. He hit 32 boundaries and 28 sixes in his 9 innings. To put that in context he ranks 9th in most sixes hits by a batsman by playing 5 fewer matches than everyone.
So, it was a shock when he was not selected for the upcoming T20 World Cup squad. But to be fair to Cricket Australia, he performed mostly after the squad was announced, so it was not that bad of a decision.
ICC T20 World Cup 2024: McGurk Late Entry?
But it looks like, Australia is going to redeem their mistake and will include McGurk in the squad after all. Reports have come out stating that Australia is considering adding McGurk and Matt Short as traveling reserves.
Earlier, Australia chief selector George Bailey suggested that the Aussies will travel for the World Cup with just one reserve. But they are likely to make changes to their provisional squad and add more reserves.
India has also announced 4 travelling reserves and it makes sense considering that David Warner is not blasting like usual. So, getting McGurk as an option will be a huge asset and him can Travis Head will be a deadly opening duo.
