ICC T20 World Cup 2024: It looks like the Pakistan team’s troubles are only increasing ahead of the apex cricket tournament. After an underwhelming performance against Ireland, there are more reports coming out.
According to the reports, left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi was offered the vice-captaincy position of the squad ahead of the T20 World Cup. But the pacer has rejected the offer and will be part of the squad as a player only.
These reports have generated a rumor of a possible rift in the squad. It looks like there is a sense of injustice prevailing in the mind of Shaheen after he was abruptly removed from the captaincy of the squad earlier this year.
Rift In The Squad?
The PCB-Shaheen saga has taken an ugly turn. After naming Babar Azam as the skipper of Pakistan ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, the committee raised the option of gaming Shaheen as his deputy.
But after his refusal by Shaheen, the World Cup squad was announced without naming anyone as the vice-captain. The left-arm pacer was appointed as the captain of the Pakistan team earlier this year. But his captaincy stint ended abruptly after only one series and Babar was once again announced as the captain.
The bowler has never felt that the reasons for his removal were valid and was hurt after it. This development only showcases how much mending needs to be done to secure another relationship between PCB and Shaheen.
