ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Pakistan’s early exit from the tournament has raised a lot of questions about the team and the management. Pakistani legend Wasim Akram raised questions about the commitment of the players and asked for the sacking of the skipper Babar Azam.
Ahmed Shehzad also ignited the fire stating that Azam and co. had been fooling Pakistan for a long time. Amidst all the chaos, several reports came that stated that the PCB selection committee is considering to sack 8-9 players from the team.
This overhaul in the squad might seem like a good decision, but is a very tricky part. Former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi somewhat defended Babar Azam and other senior players and questioned PCB over these reports.
‘What Is PCB Planning?
Afridi opened up about the reports and stated that the Pakistan team can not afford to drop Babar as the skipper. It was shocking because Afridi had previously criticized Babar’s form and his captaincy.
He stated “I saw on social media that they want to drop 8-9 players. I don’t know what’s the reality but this can’t happen. You can drop 8-9 players when you have the next lot ready to take over. If you want to drop Babar, not as a player, do you have anyone to replace him?
Do you have any performers like Babar? Do we have a replacement for Mohammad Rizwan on our bench? You make such harsh calls when you have a new lot ready to step up.
It’s like blaming the players after the world and starting from scratch and months before the next World Cup, you are still experimenting with the squad. This is not right.”
ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Nature’s Call
Pakistan was knocked out of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 officially when the match between USA and Ireland was washed out. Pakistan’s campaign was already a disaster as they lost a winnable match against India and were the prey of a giant-killing against the USA.
Afridi opened up about the performances of the players and urged PCB to not select players based on 2-3 innings.
He stated “If we continue to select players based on 2-3 innings and ignore stars of domestic cricket, it’s harsh on those who perform in the domestic circuit for years.”
