ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Shubman Gill has been a center of controversy for a few days now. On Friday, reports came out that India will release Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan will be released from the squad due to disciplinary issues.
Gill and Avesh were part of the traveling substitute for the Indian team alongside Rinku Singh and Khaleel Ahmed. India qualified for the Super 8 round with 7 points in 4 matches and will now travel to West Indies.
The reports started surfacing that Gill and Avesh won’t be traveling to Carribean with the team due to some disciplinary issues. The reports picked up heat when it was revealed that Gill had unfollowed skipper Rohit Sharma on Instagram.
But, the Indian batting coach Vikram Rathour quashed all those rumors and gave the real reason for the duo to be sent back.
‘Was Always The Plan’
According to Rathour, it was always the plan and management has taken the call before the beginning of ICC T20 World Cup 2024. It was pre-planned that only two traveling reserves would be part of the squad for the Carribean leg.
Rathour stated “This was a plan from the beginning. When we come to the US, four players will come together. After that two will be released and two will travel with us to the West Indies.
So, this plan was made from the beginning since the team was selected. This was planned so we are just following that.”
ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Washed Out Game
Rathour also shed some light on the washed-out game between India and Canada. He stated that India would have loved to get some match practice before Super 8. But considering the ground condition, it was wise to call off the match.
He stated “The concern is always there when you play on the conditions which are not ideal. So, the decision to play or not to play is over with the match officials. So as a team, we didn’t have any say in that.
But if the game had happened that would have helped us. We were looking forward to playing a game, to play a good game of cricket.”
