The International Cricket Council(ICC) is looking to introduce a dedicated fund for Test Cricket. The figures discussed are astonishing as the apex cricket council wants to tackle several issues.
This comes after the fact that several players around the globe have ditched the test format for a lucrative deal in the franchise league. Players like Trent Boult and Quinton De Kock are a few examples.
The Cricket Council believes that the introduction of a dedicated fund with decrease the temptation of franchise cricket as players will get increased wages. With test cricket evolving, this might be the best thing for it.
ICC Test Fund
It is being reported that Cricket Australia and England Cricket Board have also accepted the offer. Jay Shah who is in line to become the next ICC chairman is also in support of the idea.
According to reports, a fund of at least 15 million will be introduced for test cricket. The fund would increase the minimum match payment for Test players and cover the cost of sending teams on overseas tours.
CA chairman Mike Baird talked about the fund back in January and stated, “It’s fantastic to see some momentum behind the Test match fund. We need to take away the barriers and encourage Test cricket to be the best of the best. To retain that history and that legacy, which goes alongside the newer forms of white ball cricket.”
No Profit For Big 3
It is also reported that the fund might not impact the top 3 in England, Australia, and India in any way. These three boards already provide their players with substantial salaries.
The ECB has already shown its desire to help as they will introduce a touring fee when Zimbabwe will visit England next May. The host team always covers the accommodation and related costs, but England will cover the traveling fees of the Zimbabwe team as well.
