ICC World Cup 2023: Abdullah Shafique, batting for Pakistan, narrowly avoided dismissal in the ODI World Cup 2023 due to a miscommunication between Sri Lankan fielders Dilshan Madushanka and Pathum Nissanka.
Brainfade moment by Sri Lankan fielders
In the 14th over of Pakistan‘s run chase, facing a short ball from Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana, Abdullah Shafique mistimed his pull shot and spooned the ball high in the air towards fine leg. The short outfield behind the wicket at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium gave the ball extra hang time, and two fielders converged on it at the fine leg boundary. Dilshan Madushanka, running in from fine leg, saw Pathum Nissanka approaching from square leg.
Madushanka’s brief pause while trying to catch the ball, combined with Nissanka coming to a halt, resulted in the ball sailing over the boundary rope for a six. Both Sri Lankan fielders exchanged disapproving glances, as Abdullah Shafique not only remained in the game but also added six runs to his score. He later went on to score 113 off 103 balls.
