In a significant development, Virat Kohli, the linchpin of Team India’s batting lineup, will be absent from the first T20I against Afghanistan, slated to commence on January 11. Head coach Rahul Dravid confirmed Kohli’s absence in a pre-match press conference, citing personal reasons. Kohli, who recently returned to the T20I squad, last played in the format during the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-finals against England.
Return of Senior Duo Sparks Debate:
The return of Kohli and Rohit Sharma to the T20I squad sparked debates among fans and critics, given the commendable performances by emerging youngsters in their absence. Players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Tilak Varma, and Rinku Singh showcased their prowess in various roles over the past year.
However, with the T20 World Cup on the horizon and injuries sidelining Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav, the BCCI decided to rely on the experience of the senior duo. Kohli’s exceptional run in the IPL, securing the fourth position in run-scoring charts, and his role as the top run-getter in the preceding T20 World Cup played pivotal roles in this decision.
Batting Order Adjustments:
With Kohli absent for the series opener, Shubman Gill is likely to step into the no.3 slot, as Dravid confirmed Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal will open the innings. Meanwhile, Tilak Varma and Rinku Singh are expected to retain their positions in the playing XI.
Focus on Wicketkeeper Slot:
A point of intrigue remains in the wicketkeeper position, with Jitesh Sharma competing against Sanju Samson for the role. The first T20I against Afghanistan will serve as a crucial preparation for Team India ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Upcoming Cricket Schedule:
Following the T20I series against Afghanistan, Team India will shift its focus to a five-Test series against England. The Indian Premier League (IPL) is scheduled to take place in March, April, and May, providing further opportunities for players to showcase their form and stake a claim for the T20 World Cup squad.
