IND vs AUS: Matt Renshaw will replace David Warner in the second Test against India in Delhi, as Warner has been subbed out due to concussion. During the match, Warner was hit on the helmet by a bouncer from Mohammed Siraj, after having already suffered a painful blow to his elbow. He attempted to pull the bouncer but missed and the ball hit the grill of his helmet and left jaw as he turned his head towards the leg side.
Why was David Warner replaced in IND vs AUS?
After receiving a blow to his elbow, David Warner was attended to by the Australia team doctor and physio for an extended period. However, he did not undergo a concussion test or change his helmet after being hit on the head. At the end of the 10th over, Warner changed his gloves and the team doctor checked on him, but there was only a brief discussion between the two about where the ball had hit the helmet. Neither Warner nor the helmet itself were closely examined before they returned to the dugout.
Despite the blow to his helmet, Warner continued to bat but struggled and was eventually dismissed for 15 after edging a delivery from Mohammed Shami to the wicketkeeper. He did not field later in the day when Australia started bowling, citing feeling less than “100 percent”. Cricket Australia, in a statement said, “Warner will now follow the graduated return to sport protocols ahead of the third Test in Indore in line with Cricket Australia guidelines.”
After further evaluation during the evening, Warner failed a concussion test and was subsequently pulled out of the match.
Matt Renshaw performance
Although Matt Renshaw will replace Warner as an opener in the second innings, he will not be permitted to bowl as a replacement. Renshaw had played in the first Test in Nagpur but was left out after Australia’s innings defeat to make way for the return of Travis Head.
The Australian team has been facing several injury concerns during this tour. Cameron Green and Mitchell Starc were both unable to recover from their broken fingers in time to make the team for the Delhi Test, while Josh Hazlewood has also missed the first two matches.
