IND vs AUS WTC Final 2023: Amidst the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval, where Australia currently holds the upper hand, a significant controversy unfolded on the penultimate day involving Indian opener Shubman Gill. Following the day’s play, Shubman Gill posted a story on Instagram with emojis targeting the controversial call by the umpires. Apart from that fans were also left wondering why the soft signal was not used in the game.
Shubman Gill shares anger on social media
The dispute erupted when Gill was caught by Cameron Green at gully, triggering an extensive review process by third umpire Richard Kettleborough before ultimately being given out. A significant portion of fans, as well as some former cricketers, expressed a sense of injustice towards the Indian team and rallied behind Gill, who was visibly stunned by the decision. Both Gill and captain Rohit Sharma, who was batting with him at the time, did not hold back in voicing their frustration. However, Gill has now taken his response to the next level.
Following the conclusion of Day 4, which witnessed India making progress towards a mammoth 444-run chase by reaching 164/3, Gill turned to social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter to express his personal perspective on the matter. Without explicitly mentioning anyone, Gill cleverly took a swipe at the official and shared a screenshot capturing Green’s remarkable leftward dive to secure a low-level catch.
Based on the screenshots shared by Gill, it is clear that the Australian fielder had made contact with the ground before fully completing the catch, resulting in Gill’s innings being cut short at 18 off 19 balls.

Why was the soft signal not used in IND vs AUS WTC Final 2023?
The absence of the soft signal rule during the incident can be attributed to a recent change in the ICC Playing Conditions, wherein the regulation was eliminated at the beginning of June. The new laws were implemented for the first time during the England-Ireland match at Lord’s just a week ago. The decision to remove the soft signal rule was made by a committee within the International Cricket Council (ICC), which includes former India captain Sourav Ganguly as a member.
Sourav Ganguly had earlier stated, “Soft signals have been discussed at previous cricket committee meetings over the last couple of years. The committee deliberated this at length and concluded that soft signals were unnecessary and at times confusing since referrals of catches may seem inconclusive in replays.”
