IND vs BAN Asia Cup 2023: Shubman Gill notched up his fifth century in One-Day Internationals during the Asia Cup match between India and Bangladesh, held at Colombo’s R Premadasa Stadium. Gill’s century was the only significant batting performance for India. The team was missing Virat Kohli, who was rested, and Shreyas Iyer, who was injured, resulting in as many as five changes in the lineup while Gill took up the charge. Bangladesh had set a target of 268 runs.
Shubman Gill’s valiant century
India faced early setbacks as captain Rohit Sharma was dismissed without scoring a run on just the second ball of the innings. By the 24th over, India found themselves in trouble at 94 runs for the loss of four wickets. Gill and Suryakumar Yadav managed to put together a resilient 45-run partnership in the middle order, but Yadav departed shortly after, leaving Gill to carry the burden of the chase as he waged a lone battle in pursuit of the 266-run target.
The 24-year-old cricketer hit six boundaries and four maximums as he reached century in 117 balls. During this achievement, Gill also surpassed the milestone of 1000 runs in the calendar year 2023, making him the 13th Indian to do so. It’s worth noting that Sachin Tendulkar holds the record with 1894 runs in the year 1998, leading the list.
