IND vs ENG 1st Test Day 1: India easily defeated England for 246 on the first day of the first Test here on Thursday, and at stumps, they were at 119 for 1.After losing captain Rohit Sharma (24), India trailed by 127 runs at the close of the day’s play, with young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal batting on a 70-ball 76 and Shubman Gill undefeated on 14. In Hyderabad, Ben Stokes, the captain of England, won the toss and decided to bat first.
Explosive Start by England Openers
Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley, the openers, were aggressive from the start, smashing Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah all over the pitch in the first ten overs. But after the spinners entered the contest, India stormed ahead.
Ravichandran Ashwin grabbed first blood in the 12th over by removing Duckett. Jadeja then grabbed the wicket of Ollie Pope and it brought Joe Root in. On the second ball that Root faced off Jadeja, he had a near miss as India attempted in vain to overturn a rejected LBW claim. Soon after, Crawley fell, but Root and Bairstow managed to steady the ship as it headed towards England.
Root-Bairstow Partnership
The two scored 61 off 105 balls, but as soon as play in the second session resumed, they were both sent back. With two more wickets added, India took the lead, and Jasprit Bumrah joined in on what has been the spinners’ day off for the most part. When England were down to their final two wickets, captain Ben Stokes changed tactics and he and debutant Tom Hartley enjoyed a valuable 38-run partnership for the eighth wicket.
He had Mark Wood at the other end, and England were 215/8. With a six off the very next ball, Stokes reached his half-century mark. But shortly after play resumed, Wood went down, which put No. 10 Jack Leach in the middle.
Stokes’ Aggressive Batting
Stokes collected as many strikes as he could before Bumrah gave him an unplayable delivery, which caused him to fall on 70 off 88. As a result, England was dismissed for 246 runs.
