IND Vs IRE T20 World Cup: In a move that no one expected, Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid decided to bench Kuldeep Yadav in their ICC T20 World Cup 2024 opening match.
The world is expectedly shocked as everyone thought one of the pacers would be benched. Many experts and fans thought that Siraj would be the one to be benched but the Indian skipper went the other way.
The way pitches are acting up in the USA, playing three spinners would have been a good option. Axar, Jadeja, and Kuldeep were the sure picks on these pitches. But this decision by Indian team management shows the problem India has had in the past few T20 World Cups.
Huge Blunder Or Masterstroke?
This decision to bench Kuldeep Yadav is not entirely new. India has always somehow found a way to bench a wrist spinner in these T20 World Cups. In 2021, we saw Yuzvendra Chahal getting benched.
In a format where every single team looks to include a wrist spinner in their teams somehow, India avoids it. It gets worse when you think that India has two of the best wrist spinners in the world in their squads.
Other teams would kill to have two bowling options like Chahal and Kuldeep in their arsenal. They might get expensive but they have a knack for taking wickets. Any other team would love to have those wickets.
It might be to do something with the mentality. While other teams like to get aggressive with their spin bowling, India tends to opt for a defensive spin bowling attack. And with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj, and Arshdeep Singh they can opt for that.
