IND vs NEP Asia Cup 2023: Late on Saturday night, thousands of spectators at the Pallekele International Stadium in Kandy, as well as those watching on television, experienced frustration as they endured lengthy delays due to rain. The much-anticipated India-Pakistan clash was disrupted by rain twice during India’s innings, albeit briefly, before they managed to complete their innings. However, rain persisted, interrupting proceedings for the third time before the second innings could begin. However, if Team India is hoping for a break from the rain and an opportunity to play a quality game against Nepal, they may face similar weather-related challenges.
Rain continues to drench the venue
Sri Lanka typically avoids scheduling cricket matches in September due to the island’s monsoon season. Currently, regions like Pallekele and Colombo have experienced significant rainfall in recent days, and the rain threat persists on Monday, especially in Kandy. According to Accuweather, there is an 89 percent probability of precipitation, with the weather forecast indicating cloudiness with showers and an additional 26 percent chance of thunderstorms. The hourly forecast indicates that the heaviest rain is expected between 11 am and 4 pm, suggesting a potential delay in the start of the match.
On Sunday, the Indian team refrained from practicing for their upcoming match against Nepal. In contrast, their opponents were present at the venue and conducted an indoor training session because the pitch was covered due to continuous rain throughout the day.
Pakistan secured a spot in the Super Four stage by earning one point, achieved through their victory over Nepal on September 30 in Multan. In that match, Captain Babar Azam scored a record-breaking 151, while Iftikhar Ahmed reached his maiden century.
What happens if IND vs NEP Asia Cup 2023 clash gets washed out?
However, if India’s match against Nepal is also affected by rain, their chances of advancing to the next round may be in jeopardy. According to the rules, a minimum of 20 overs must be played for a match to determine a winner. If the start of the match is delayed, the number of overs may be reduced based on the hours lost. Similarly, if rain disrupts the second innings, scores will be adjusted accordingly as the overs are reduced. The outcome will depend on the extent of rain-related disruptions and the overs played.
If the match between India and Nepal follows a similar fate as Saturday’s rain-affected game, where neither team is able to secure a full match, both teams will earn one point each. Consequently, Nepal will be eliminated from contention for the Super Four stage, while India will advance with a total of two points from the two washed-out matches in the group stage. This outcome could have a psychological impact on the Indian team as they will enter the second round of the tournament without having been tested, which is concerning given that the tournament is intended to serve as a rehearsal for the ODI World Cup next month.
