IND vs PAK: The T20 World Cup 2022 match between India and Pakistan on Sunday in Melbourne ended up being one of the best cricket games the two teams had ever played. India had to score 16 runs in the final six balls to win the game. Although it appeared for a little period of time that Pakistan would possibly win the game, Mohammad Nawaz’s no-ball allowed India to get back into the contest. However, the no-ball decision wasn’t without controversy, as there was a lot of chatter on social media that the umpire may have taken the decision under pressure from Virat Kohli.
On the A Sports panel, Pakistani cricketing great Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, and Shoaib Malik discussed the controversial subject and proposed that the third umpire should have been consulted over the call.
“The ball seemed to dip but it’s kind of touch and go. To the naked eye, it did not seem like a no-ball but in slow-motion, it does seem like it dipped … Any batsman will turn and ask for no ball. That’s not his [Kohli’s] fault. Such a big game. You have the technology. Use it. Why flare up things unnecessarily?” Akram said.
Waqar Younis, also shared some intriguing comments. He said the leg-umpire should have called a no-ball immediately rather than waiting for Virat Kohli to request it. Furthermore, Waqar emphasised that the leg-umpire should have talked with the line-umpire before referring the matter to the third umpire. Waqar himself steadfastly refused to declare whether the ruling was a no-ball or not, but he did stress the need of sending such matters up to the higher levels.
“When the ball is about waist-high, the square-leg umpire’s first reaction is that he takes his hand out, and extends his right hand. That’s his natural reaction. But if you look at the replays, he (Marius Erasmus) turns around to see the ball. Then after Virat Kohli asked for it…
Social media users who are fans of cricket and former players are still having a heated discussion about the no-ball event.
