IND vs SL Asia Cup 2023: Men in Blue have clinched the Asia Cup trophy after five years. The match, a highly anticipated one, ended quickly as bowlers (Especially) Siraj displayed a remarkable performance. India won the match with 269 balls remaining as they chased down the target of 51 runs within 6.1 overs. This is the biggest win for India in terms of balls remaining. Also, this is India’s 8th Asia Cup trophy, continuing their run as the most successful team in the tournament’s history.
In the Asia Cup 2023 final, the Indian pacers unleashed their full potential, showing a remarkable performance as they bowled out Sri Lanka for a mere 50 runs on Sunday, September 17, in Colombo. Mohammed Siraj delivered an outstanding performance, recording the third-best bowling figures by an Indian in ODI cricket, with 6/13 to his name. Chasing a small total of 51, Ishan Kishan scored 23 off 18 balls while Shubman Gill scored 27 off 19 balls as India ended their chase within 6.1 overs.
Siraj’s brilliant spell
Siraj was in sublime form, taking four wickets in a single over. He dismissed Pathum Nissanka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, and Dhananjaya de Silva in the fourth over of the innings. Remarkably, he returned in the very next over to remove Sri Lanka’s captain, Dasun Shanaka, completing a five-wicket haul in just 16 balls. This achievement equalled Chamida Vaas’ record for the fastest five-wicket haul in ODIs. At one point, Sri Lanka’s score read 12/6 in 4 overs.
Sri Lanka completely fails
None of the Sri Lankan batsmen could effectively contend with the Indian bowlers, who were in exceptional form. Kusal Mendis emerged as the top scorer with 17 runs from 34 deliveries, while Dushan Hemantha contributed 13 runs from 15 balls; these were the only two Sri Lankan batsmen who managed to reach double figures. Apart from Siraj, Hardik Pandya concluded with figures of 3/3, claiming 2 wickets in 2 consecutive balls to wrap up the Sri Lankan innings. Jasprit Bumrah picked a wicked in the first over as well.
