IND Vs SL first ODI is underway and the Blues are targeting that Number 1 rank in this format. The Indian team has been a dominant force in this format for a while now and that ranking will be proof of that.

But before that, everyone got curious as the Indian players came out while wearing black armbands. BCCI soon released a statement stating “Team India is wearing black armbands today in memory of former Indian cricketer and coach Aunshuman Gaekwad, who passed away on Wednesday.”

Gaekwad, aged 71, passed away on Wednesday after losing a long battle with cancer. It is a somber occasion as Aunshuman was a loyal Indian servant and had played some sensational innings in whites. He also helped so many players in his brief coaching tenure on the Indian team.

Definition Of Grit

Gaekwad’s career can be defined with words like grit, perseverance, and resistance. His 81 runs inning against Zimbabwe in the era of open pitches and no helmets is a perfect example of that.

Gaekwad had two tenures with the Indian coaching position. First in 1997-99 and during that tenure Anil Kumble took 10 wickets in an innings against Pakistan. he was later reappointed after Kapil Dev vacated the position.

In June 2018, Gaekwad was awarded the C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honor conferred by BCCI on a former player. His passing has affected the Indian cricket fraternity and we wish her family the best in these tough times.

IND Vs SL: Solid Start

This is India’s first ODI under Gautam Gambhir. The Blues have solidly started their ODI campaign as Mohammed Siraj took an early wicket to give India a great start. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera are decently rebuilding the innings and we might be getting a good contest.
