Ind Vs WI 2023: Sourav Ganguly presented his views on the topic of the World Test Championship loss and making Ajinkya Rahane the vice-captain. In the upcoming Ind Vs WI 2023 series, Rahane has been picked as the vice-captain.
The 36-year-old returned to the side after 18 months when he played in the WTC 2023 final. In a humiliating defeat, Rahane’s resurgence of form was the only positive for India. And BCCI awarded him with the vice-captaincy in the West Indies tour.
Rahane was the Vice-Captain in the famous 2021 Border Gavaskar trophy. And he was promoted to captain in that series when Kohli went back to India. And impressively, he led a young side to a test series win in Australia.
The decision to make him the vice-captain was still bizarre. Usually, a young player gets that role as the selectors see him as the team’s future leader. But Rahane is 35 years old now and surely won’t be in the team for that long himself.
Ind Vs WI 2023: Ganguly Doesn’t Agree
In an interview, Sourav Ganguly stated that he does not agree with the decision to make Rahane the vice-captain for the upcoming West Indies series. The Ex-BCCI president further stated that he does not understand the thought process behind the selection.
Ganguly further stated that even though he does not think this is a step backward, the decision is still bizarre when you have a player like Ravindra Jadeja on the team. Sourav Ganguly also agreed on the fact that Shuibman Gill could have also been made captain as he can lead India in the future.
IPL Was Not The Reason
Sourav Ganguly further clarified that IPL was not the reason for World Test Championship 2023 loss. Many fans and critics were slamming India’s board for not giving players enough time in England. But Ganguly believes that the players had enough time to get settled in.
He stated that players like Cameron Green, David Warner, and Ajinkya Rahane played in IPL and also performed well in WTC 2023 final. So that excuse is not valid here. Australia is currently playing its second Ashes test match against England.
