IND Women Team: Equal salary will now be given to all centrally contracted men’s and women’s Team India players as declared by the BCCI on Thursday, marking a historic landmark. BCCI secretary Jay Shah broke the news by posting- it to Twitter.
“I’m pleased to announce BCCI’s first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing a pay equity policy for our contracted women cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be the same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Indian Cricket,” Shah tweeted.
Harmanpreet Kaur and company will get the same match money as their male counterparts—Rs. 15 lakh every Test, Rs. 6 lakh per ODI, and Rs. 3 lakh per T20I—under the present system. “The women cricketers will be paid the same match fee as their male counterparts. Test (INR 15 lakhs), ODI (INR 6 lakhs), T20I (INR 3 lakhs). Pay equity was my commitment to our women cricketers and I thank the Apex Council for their support,” he added.
By defeating Sri Lanka by 8 wickets in the Asia Cup final at Sylhet, the Indian women’s team just took home the trophy in Bangladesh. At the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham earlier this year, they also helped India win the sport’s first-ever medal. Australia won the championship, and the team led by Harmanpreet Kaur took home silver.
India’s performance at the 2017 Women’s ODI World Cup in England, where they fell to the hosts in the tournament final, resulted in an unprecedented increase in the popularity of women’s cricket in the nation.
The BCCI also revealed plans for the inaugural women’s IPL, which would include five teams, during its most recent AGM earlier this month in Mumbai.
