Former Indian opener and captain Sunil Gavaskar has praised limited overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma. Gavaskar said that he would be proud to bat like Rohit in limited overs cricket.
Many experts and former players see Rohit Sharma as the greatest opener in One Day cricket. Rohit Sharma is opening the innings for Indian since 2013 Champions Trophy. His numbers as an opener has totally changed the perception of Indian cricket for Rohit Sharma, who was always considered as the Number 5 or Number 6 batsman before 2013.
Although Rohit Sharma had opened three times in 2011, but after that when he got a chance again, he did not look back. After scoring 83 against England in Mohali, he also started the innings in the 2013 Champions Trophy and his journey started.
In the latest episode of India Today Inspiration, Sunil Gavaskar said, “The way you see Rohit Sharma batting in ODI cricket, you have to bat before the over … that’s how I wanted to play.”
Gavaskar admitted, ‘The circumstances and certainly the lack of confidence in my ability did not allow me to do so. But when I see the next generation doing this, I feel very happy. I like to see the next generation because you see progress there.
He said, ‘Rohit’s batting style is not the answer for playing comfortably against both pace and spin. He is arguably the best batsman in ODIs after Virat Kohli.
33-year-old Rohit Sharma has scored 27 centuries as an opener in ODIs, while he has 4 centuries in T20 International, which is the highest in this international format.
