Israel-Hamas Conflict: In light of safety concerns stemming from the situation in Gaza, the Indian team has opted to cancel their participation in the World Cadet Chess Championship. The championship, initially planned to take place in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, from October 14 to 23, will no longer include the Indian contingent, as announced by the All India Chess Federation (AICF) through a press release.
AICF pulls out of Championship
This decision was taken with the utmost consideration for the well-being of the participants, particularly in the under-12, under-10, and under-8 categories. AICF announced, “Considering the ongoing situation at Gaza Strip between Israel & Hamas and the age of participants, after due deliberations it was decided our delegation will not participate in the World Cadet Chess Championship-2023.”
According to sources within the AICF, approximately 80 individuals, including players, coaches, and their companions, were originally slated to make the journey to Sharm el-Sheikh for the championship. The press release also highlighted the fact that Sharm el-Sheikh is situated less than 400 kilometers from the Israel border, making it susceptible to the potential repercussions of the ongoing conflict, which could disrupt commercial airline operations in the Middle East with little advance notice.
ECF assures security for everyone
An official from the AICF also verified that the Indian federation has formally made a request to the World Chess Body (FIDE) to consider postponing the tournament. In the interim, Dr. Hesham Elgendy, the President of the Egyptian Chess Federation (ECF), issued a reassuring message to all the participants, stating: “I’d like to assure you that the Egyptian Government ensures security of all players & participants of WCCC 2023 at Sharm El Sheikh Egypt.”
