Jay Shah: On December 1, 2024, Jay Shah officially became the Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC). He took over from Greg Barclay, marking a significant milestone in world cricket administration. In his first statement as ICC Chair, Shah emphasised the sport's bright future. He highlighted cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Jay Shah also discussed growing women’s cricket and expanding the sport’s global reach.

Jay Shah's Vision as ICC Chief

Jay Shah brings a wealth of experience to the ICC role. His cricket journey began with the Gujarat Cricket Association in 2009. He played a pivotal role in developing the world’s largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad. In 2019, Shah became the youngest Honorary Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He also served in significant leadership roles within the Asian Cricket Council and ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee. These experiences make him well-equipped to lead the ICC.

As ICC Chair, Shah’s focus is on making cricket more inclusive. His plans include building on cricket’s Olympic inclusion and driving the growth of women’s cricket. “Cricket has immense potential globally,” Jay Shah stated. He also stressed the importance of strategic leadership to balance the different formats of the game—Test, ODI, and T20—while ensuring their progress.

Leadership Changes in BCCI - Who Will Take Over from Jay Shah?

At the same time, the leadership of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is under close scrutiny, with the position of secretary up for discussion. Media reports suggest that Anil Patel, secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association, and Rohan Jaitley, president of the Delhi Cricket body, are the main contenders for the role. While the next BCCI secretary will not be chosen during the Special General Meeting (SGM), many are speculating that Rohan Jaitley, considered a favorite, might step into Jay Shah’s shoes.

Jay Shah’s appointment to the ICC Chair and the potential leadership shift in BCCI signal exciting times for cricket both in India and globally. With Jay Shah’s leadership at the ICC, the sport is expected to thrive on the international stage, while India’s cricketing future looks promising with the next BCCI leadership decision.
