In honour of winning the T20 World Cup, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the Indian cricket team, led by Rohit Sharma, at his home on Lok Kalyan Marg in New Delhi on Thursday. PM Modi congratulated the team for their exceptional accomplishment during this special breakfast meeting.
Warm Welcome at Lok Kalyan Marg
The T20 World Cup-winning team arrived at the Prime Minister’s residence at 11 am IST, having departed from ITC Maurya to a grand reception. Captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Rahul Dravid, and star player Virat Kohli marked the occasion by cutting a special cake prepared by the hotel chef.
In a heartwarming video, PM Modi is seen sharing laughs with the team as they reminisced about their World Cup journey. Rahul Dravid, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya also shared their experiences during the meeting. BCCI secretary Jay Shah and president Roger Binny were also present at this joyous event.
Rousing Reception at New Delhi Airport
After their meeting with PM Modi, the Indian cricket team headed back to the New Delhi airport, ready to fly to Mumbai for a grand open-top bus parade. The Men in Blue, sporting customized jerseys with ‘Champions’ emblazoned on them, were warmly received by thousands of fans at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Despite the early morning rain, fans lined up outside Terminal 3 to catch a glimpse of their heroes.
Rohit Sharma, holding the T20 World Cup trophy high, became a viral sensation with his celebratory pose. Virat Kohli, waving to fans and posing for photos, along with Rahul Dravid, who basked in the adulation from the crowd, added to the excitement.
Grand Felicitation at Wankhede Stadium
Later in the day, the team will be honored at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. BCCI secretary Jay Shah will hand over the trophy and a prize money of Rs 125 crore to the victorious players. Rohit Sharma, in a social media post, urged fans to join the celebrations, making the event a memorable one for all.
A Historic Victory
An 11-year wait for an ICC trophy came to an end in 2024 with India’s T20 World Cup triumph. After going undefeated and winning against Australia and England, the squad defeated South Africa in an exciting final at Kensington Oval in Barbados to claim the title. Senior players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja retired from T20 international cricket after this successful season, and head coach Rahul Dravid concluded his career with a flourish.
