ICC World Cup 2023: Many top-tier athletes have donned the legendary blue jersey throughout India’s illustrious cricket history, solidifying their supremacy in the One Day International (ODI) format. With the ICC World Cup 2023 happening on Indian soil this year, the Men in Blue are the first favourites to win this edition. However, this is also backed by certain records which show the dominance of India in the 50-over format.
Five Astonishing ODI records held by India
1. Most Wins While Chasing
In One Day Internationals (ODIs), India seems to have a stronger performance record when they opt to bat second, a trend supported by statistical data. Out of India’s 535 ODI victories, a substantial 302 have been achieved when they were chasing a target. Australia, with 258 wins while chasing ranks second in this category.
2. Scoring 300 Or More
In One Day Internationals (ODIs), India has achieved the milestone of surpassing the 300-run mark an impressive 126 times, positioning them at the forefront among teams with the highest number of 300+ scores. Australia follows closely in second place with 114 such instances on the leaderboard.
3. Most Individual Centuries
In the realm of ODI cricket, notable players such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma have proudly represented India on the international stage, amassing a plethora of runs. Virat Kohli, with an impressive tally of 47 centuries, stands just two centuries shy of Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record of 49 centuries. On the same note, the team’s captain, Rohit Sharma, boasts 30 centuries to his name.
4. Largest Margin Of Victory
On January 15, 2023, India faced off against Sri Lanka in the series’s third and final ODI match. India posted an impressive total of 390 runs, with Kohli scoring an unbeaten 166 off 110 balls and Gill contributing 110 runs off 97 deliveries. In a stark contrast, Sri Lanka’s innings came to a quick end as they were bowled out for a mere 73 runs. India made history by securing a victory with a staggering margin of 317 runs, marking the largest winning margin (in terms of runs) in ODIs, thanks to their exceptional all-around performance.
5. Most Wins Against An Opponent
Following their series triumph in January 2023, India extended their total number of victories against the Sri Lankan Lions to 96. The Men in Blue’s remarkable dominance over Sri Lanka in One Day Internationals (ODIs) has enabled them to secure more victories against a single opponent than any other team in the format.
