INDW vs IREW: During the ongoing India-Ireland Women’s T20 World Cup at the St. George Stadium in Gqerba, Mary Waldron, the Irish wicketkeeper, caught the attention of cricket fans due to her distinct helmet. After winning the toss, India decided to bat first, and many viewers took to social media, impressed by Waldron’s helmet.
Mary Waldron tries a new kind of helmet
Waldron’s helmet is similar to a rugby helmet, and unlike regular helmets, it doesn’t offer direct protection to her head but has additional grills near her eyes to provide safety against severe injuries. She is one of the oldest players at the tournament at 38 years old and has played in 53 ODIs and 67 T20Is for Ireland since making her debut in 2010. Waldron is also Ireland’s most-capped player in history.
This isn’t the first time she has worn the unique helmet. Waldron wore it during a T20I series against Pakistan in November of last year, attracting worldwide attention.
In today’s match, India won the toss and opted to bat first, and a brilliant 87-run knock by Smriti Mandhana helped the Women in Blue to score 155 runs on a slow and sluggish pitch. However, apart from Mandhana, the other batters struggled to get going.

For India, this is a crucial match as they lost to England in their previous game. A victory will almost certainly secure their place in the semi-finals, but a defeat will put them in grave danger of being eliminated. The Harmanpreet-led team had previously won their first two matches against Pakistan and the West Indies.
