IPL 2023: The 16th edition of the Indian Premier League is only 9 days away, and the board has announced some new rules that will significantly change the game. Besides the impact player rule that was already announced earlier, there are now some additional rules that teams have to follow during the tournament.
Impact player rule in IPL 2023
The Impact Player Rule is like substitutions in team sports such as football. According to the rule, the teams have to select four substitutes before the match and can only use one if needed. The Impact Player can be brought in by the batting team at any time during the innings, whether it’s at the beginning, after a wicket falls, or when a batter retires. However, if a bowling player is substituted during an over due to a dismissal or a retire hurt, they will not be able to bowl for the rest of that over. If the Impact player is a bowler, they will get to bowl the full 4 overs spell, like any other bowler.
Unless the teams decide to have fewer foreign players in their starting lineup, the four substitutes for each team will mostly be Indian players. Each team is only allowed to have a maximum of four overseas players on the field.
More new rules for IPL 2023
- After the coin toss, teams will announce their playing 11.
- If the wicket-keeper or fielders make any unfair movements, it will result in a dead ball and 5 penalty runs.
- If an over takes too much time to complete, only four fielders will be allowed outside the 30-yard circle.
The opening match of the 16th season of the IPL will feature defending champions Gujarat Titans and four-time champions Chennai Super Kings. The match will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
