IPL 2023: Following a sluggish over-rate during Rajasthan Royals’ victory over Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday, team captain Sanju Samson was fined by the Indian Premier League authorities. Samson is the second captain to be penalized for this violation in IPL 2023, after Faf du Plessis of Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, because it is Samson’s first offence this season, he will only face a penalty of Rs 12 lakh, just like Du Plessis.
Sanju Samson fined by authorites
The official statement read, “Rajasthan Royals have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match 17 against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai on Wednesday.”
If a captain commits a second offence of slow over-rate in an Indian Premier League season, they will be fined 24 lakhs, while the other 10 players of the team will either be fined six lakhs or 25% of their match fees, whichever is lower. In case of a third and subsequent offence in the same season, the team captain will be fined 30 lakhs and suspended for one match. Additionally, the other 10 players will face a fine of 12 lakhs or 50% of their match fees, depending on whichever amount is lesser.
Sanju Samson’s poor form as batter
Despite registering their first win over CSK in Chennai since 2008, Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson had a forgettable night as he was dismissed for a duck by Ravindra Jadeja. He now has 97 runs in the tournament this year in four matches. However, it was Sandeep Sharma who stole the show with his match-winning bowling performance, defending 21 runs in the final over against CSK’s formidable batting duo of MS Dhoni and Jadeja.
