IPL 2023: News has surfaced indicating a potential game-changing shift in cricket as Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises have reportedly made lucrative multi-million-pound annual contract offers to six esteemed English internationals. Alongside these offers, the franchises have allegedly requested that these players step away from international cricket, marking a significant development in the sport as we currently know it. The offers are as big as INR 50 crore to each player.
Franchises in talks with English cricketers
As per a report, IPL teams have initiated discussions with renowned English cricketers regarding a potential arrangement that would align cricket with the football model, where clubs become the primary employers of players. However, the report did not disclose the identities of the franchise or the players involved in these discussions.
Under the proposed deal, players would represent a single franchise in various leagues worldwide. In recent times, IPL franchises have significantly expanded their presence on the global stage by acquiring teams in the South Africa T20 League, the ILT20 based in the UAE, and the emerging Major T20 League in the United States, set to debut in the upcoming season. Additionally, if the Saudi T20 League materializes, IPL franchises are anticipated to play a substantial role in the tournament.
Player unions have been engaged in discussions regarding the possibility of 12-month contracts for players with IPL franchises. It has been revealed that the contracts offered to the English players are anticipated to range from 2 to 5 million pounds annually. Furthermore, reports indicate that similar discussions have previously taken place with Australian cricketers.
Franchises having stake in foreign leagues
In terms of extensive international involvement, the Mumbai Indians (MI) stand out with their ownership in teams located in South Africa, the UAE, and the USA. Interestingly, all six teams participating in the South African league have IPL ownership, with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Delhi Capitals (DC), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) also having their stake in the league. Additionally, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have ownership in teams based in the UAE, USA, and West Indies.
