IPL 2023: Delhi Capitals have taken a big decision just before the start of the 16th season of the Indian Premier League. In the absence of Rishabh Pant, the command of the team has been given to David Warner. Along with this, star all-rounder Axar Patel has been appointed as the vice-captain of the team. Pant, who has been commanding Delhi Capitals for the last 2 seasons, will not be able to be a part of the tournament this time due to injury in the accident.
David Warner appointed as Delhi Capitals’ new captain for IPL 2023
For the past several days, speculations were being made about David Warner becoming the captain. Team director Sourav Ganguly had also indicated that Warner should be made the captain. After getting the captaincy of Delhi Capitals, Warner said, “Pant has been an excellent leader for Delhi. We will miss Pant’s contribution. I am thankful to the management for showing confidence in me. For me, to lead the team of young players It’s a matter of pride.”
Rishabh Pant’s injury leaves Delhi Capitals in need of a new captain
Rishabh Pant was seriously injured in a car accident on December 30, 2022, after which Team Delhi had to take this decision. In the accident, Pant had an injury on his forehead and had a ligament injury in his right knee. The BCCI had said in a statement that Pant has undergone surgery and will be away from cricket for at least 6 months. In the last season i.e. 2022, under the captaincy of Pant, Delhi Capitals finished the season at number five. The team could not qualify for the playoffs. Delhi won 7 out of 14 matches and scored 14 points. Pant was appointed as the captain of Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021. He has captained a total of 30 matches in the IPL so far, in which his team has won 17 and lost 13.

Warner’s history with Delhi Capitals and IPL captaincy record
This is not the first time that David Warner will take charge of Delhi. This will be his second captaincy tenure in Delhi. He captained the team during his time with the then Delhi Daredevils between 2009 and 2013. After this, Sunrisers Hyderabad bought him. And a year later he was made captain. In 2016, Warner took Sunrisers to the title. Warner has so far captained a total of 69 matches in the history of IPL, in which the teams under his captaincy have won 35 matches and lost 33 matches. That is, the winning percentage of any team under his captaincy is above 50. Now it has to be seen what he can do for Delhi in IPL 2023.
