IPL 2023: Kolkata Knight Riders have brought in Jason Roy, star England batter, as a replacement player after two of their star players, Shreyas Iyer and Shakib Al Hasan, withdrew from the tournament. Roy has acquired INR 2.8 crore (about USD 341,000), which is higher than his initial auction price of INR 1.5 crore (about USD 183,000).
Jason Roy in IPL
English cricketers are only allowed to sign replacement contracts for the Indian Premier League (IPL) before March 1, to ensure their counties can plan for the start of the County Championship season. However, cricketers with central contracts or incremental deals from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) can be signed after this deadline. Although Jason Roy lost his central contract in October, he still has an incremental deal, making him eligible for the IPL.
Jason Roy is no stranger to the IPL, having played for Gujarat Titans in 2020 and Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2021. However, he took a break from cricket last year, and had opted out of the tournament. In 2021, he represented Sunrisers Hyderabad and managed to score 150 runs from five games, with an average of 30 and a strike rate of 123.96. He had also opted out of the IPL in 2020, citing personal reasons, when he was part of the Delhi Capitals team.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have only played one match so far in IPL 2023, which they lost to Punjab Kings by seven runs in a rain-affected game in Mohali. They are set to play their next match against Royal Challengers Bangalore at their home ground, Eden Gardens, on Thursday.
KKR’s setback for IPL 2023
Unfortunately, KKR has been hit by two setbacks. Shreyas Iyer, one of their key players, is ruled out of the season due to a lower-back injury that requires surgery. Meanwhile, Shakib Al Hasan has withdrawn from the tournament due to personal reasons.
