IPL 2023 will be broadcasted free on Jiocinema

This season’s IPL is expected to change as a result of the ruling. This year’s IPL will be televised live for free on Jio Cinema, according to a recent announcement. The IPL will now have a wider audience thanks to the decision to include new languages. For the first time ever, the IPL will have two distinct media rights partners this year. Viacom18 will stream the IPL 2023 live, and Star Sports Network will broadcast it live on television.

According to a rumour, the streaming partner also intends to employ a different approach this season to entice advertising. Viacom18 intends to sell its inventory just like it is sold on TV rather than by the number of ad impressions it receives. The multi-billion dollar media company will market sponsorship packages and standalone inventory in 10-second intervals. The rates of inventory and sponsorship packages have reportedly been reduced in comparison to Disney+ Hotstar.

A senior media official was quoted saying “They are playing on reach and mass. They claim to reach 500+ million subscribers and no match is behind any paywall. They want to connect with newer advertisers who have always aspired to be associated with IPL but did not have the means. Also, the legacy brands will nevertheless continue their association.”

Viacom18’s massive investment on IPL 2023

The massive sum of Rs 20,500 crore was paid by Viacom18 (Sports18) to secure the IPL digital rights for the Indian subcontinent. They spend Rs. 50 crore on each IPL game. Some industry insiders claim that, given the current situation, it will be impossible for the rights holder to even recoup 50% of that cost.

An official anonymously said “Very steep is the ask. They are banking on the reach but the issues is some of the regular categories on cricket & IPL are struggling at this stage. In these difficult times, it is next to impossible for them to come anywhere closer to their buying price.”
