IPL 2023: An advisory has been issued for spectators coming to watch IPL matches in four cities – Delhi, Mohali, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad – stating that they are not allowed to carry protest banners related to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).
CAA/NRC posters prohibited in IPL 2023
‘Paytm Insider’, the official ticketing partner of IPL teams including Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Punjab Kings, has shared a list of ‘prohibited items’ that cannot be carried inside the stadium. One of the items in the list includes banners related to CAA/NRC protests.
The franchises that handle the ticketing for their respective home matches have issued the advisory. This is usually done in consultation with the BCCI to ensure that sensitive political or policy issues are not publicized during sporting events. The Citizen Amendment Act, 2019, which is also known as CAA, was passed by the Indian Parliament on December 12, 2019.
After being away from the stadium for three seasons due to COVID-19 restrictions, fans are now set to return to watch the IPL matches live. The Indian board and franchises wanted to make sure that no sensitive posters or banners are displayed inside the stadium. This specific advisory was discovered while trying to book tickets for home matches of Delhi, Gujarat, Punjab, and Hyderabad.
FIFA did the same in Qatar
Although there was no official comment from the BCCI, insiders have stated that the protocols followed by FIFA during their major events have been used to create this advisory. The aim is to prevent any unwanted incidents inside the stadium.
During the FIFA World Cup, several team captains from different countries intended to wear an armband with a rainbow flag that said “One Love” in protest of Qatar’s laws regarding same-sex relationships. However, FIFA warned that players wearing such armbands would receive yellow cards, which led the teams to change their plans.
