IPL 2024: In a significant move, the Mumbai Indians have named the young South African pace sensation, Kwena Maphaka, as the replacement for the injured Sri Lankan bowler Dilshan Madushanka for the forthcoming IPL season. Madushanka, who was acquired by Mumbai Indians for Rs 4.6 crore, sustained a hamstring injury during the recent ODI series in Bangladesh, sidelining him from the upcoming cricketing extravaganza.
Mumbai Indians Sign Rising South African Star Kwena Maphaka for IPL 2024
Maphaka, at just 17 years of age, has quickly risen through the ranks, notably being named Player of the Tournament at this year’s U19 World Cup held in South Africa, where he claimed 21 wickets with an impressive average of 9.71. His performance there, coupled with his ability to consistently deliver at speeds of 140kph and his effective use of bouncers and yorkers, has caught the attention of cricketing legends, including Allan Donald.
Maphaka has already represented South Africa A
Despite his young age, Maphaka has already represented South Africa A and the South Africa Emerging teams, showcasing his talent across various levels of the game. His addition to the Mumbai Indians squad is expected to strengthen their bowling attack, offering a fresh and fast option for the team’s pace battery.
Maphaka’s T20 career so far boasts 13 wickets in nine games, highlighting his capability in the shortest format of the game. His learning curve is set to steepen as he joins a dressing room featuring renowned bowlers such as Lasith Malinga, the team’s bowling coach, and Jasprit Bumrah, providing him an unparalleled opportunity for growth and development.
The Mumbai Indians, under the new leadership of Hardik Pandya, are set to kick off their IPL 2024 campaign against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on March 24, with high hopes for their young recruit to make a significant impact.
