Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper Shubman Gill was fined ₹12 lakh by the BCCI for maintaining a slow over rate during their IPL 2024 match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday, March 26. This was the first instance of a team being penalized for slow over rate in the ongoing edition of the tournament.
Gill Fined for First Slow Over Rate Offense This Season
The IPL stated in an official press release, “Shubman Gill, the Gujarat Titans captain, has been fined after his team failed to maintain the required over rate during their IPL 2024 match against the Chennai Super Kings. As per the IPL’s Code of Conduct regarding minimum over rate offenses, this being GT’s first offense this season, Gill was fined ₹12 lakh.”
Gill, who took over the captaincy reins from Hardik Pandya (who moved to Mumbai Indians), had a winning start with GT defeating MI in their opening encounter. However, on Tuesday, CSK emerged victorious by a convincing margin of 63 runs.
Ravindra Stars as CSK Clinch Dominant Victory
New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra played a pivotal role in CSK’s emphatic win. The explosive batsman smashed a quickfire 46 off just 20 deliveries and even pouched three crucial catches. Openers Ruturaj Gaikwad (46) and Ravindra provided CSK with a solid foundation, stitching together a 62-run partnership. Shivam Dube provided the late impetus with a belligerent 51 off 23 balls, propelling CSK to a formidable total of 206-6.
With the ball, Chennai’s bowling attack, led by Mustafizur Rahman, Deepak Chahar, and Tushar Deshpande (two wickets each), restricted Gujarat to a paltry 143-8. This win marked CSK’s second consecutive victory in IPL 2024.
What is Over Rate Offence?
In cricket, particularly limited-overs formats like IPL, ODIs, and T20s, there’s a designated number of overs that should be bowled within a specific time frame. This ensures the match progresses at a decent pace and finishes within the allocated time. Failing to bowl the stipulated overs within the allotted time is considered a slow over rate offense.
The BCCI, along with other cricket governing bodies, sets the minimum over rate that each team must achieve. For instance, in the IPL, teams are expected to bowl 14.11 overs per hour in a T20 match. If a team falls short of this benchmark, they are penalized. Penalties for slow over rate can range from fines for the captain to deductions in points from their final score, depending on the severity and frequency of the offense.
