Jakub Jankto, the Czech Republic international football player, declared that he is gay and wishes to lead his life “without fears.” In a social media video released on Monday, the Sparta Prague midfielder expressed his desire to live his life “in freedom” and not “hide” himself.

He said, “Like everybody else, I have my strengths, I have my weaknesses, I have my family, I have my friends. Like everybody else, I also want to live my life in freedom. Without fears. Without prejudice. Without violence. But with love. I’m homosexual and I no longer want to hide myself.”
Jankto has a three-year-old son named David with his former partner Marketa. In men’s professional soccer, it is uncommon for players to publicly come out as gay, unlike women’s soccer which has many well-known LGBTQ+ players.
Last year, Josh Cavallo announced that he is gay, becoming the first active man in professional football to come out publicly since Justin Fashanu, who announced his homosexuality in 1990. In May 2022, Blackpool striker Jake Daniels became the first UK male footballer to publicly come out as gay since Justin Fashanu.
Zander Murray, a Scottish footballer, came out as gay in the past year, becoming the first openly gay male player in Scotland’s professional leagues since Fashanu played for Hearts in 1994.

In 2013, former US men’s national team midfielder Robbie Rogers retired from the sport while coming out as gay in the same blog post. Jankto, who has 45 caps for the Czech Republic, played in all of their European Championship matches in 2021, helping them reach the quarterfinals. He is now on loan to Sparta Prague from LaLiga’s Getafe after making 155 appearances in Serie A with Sampdoria and Udinese.
