Jay Shah, Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has been unanimously elected as the next Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). At 35 years old, Shah becomes the youngest administrator to hold the top position in world cricket administration.
Jay Shah will officially assume the role on December 1, 2024, succeeding New Zealand’s Greg Barclay, who decided not to run for a third consecutive term. As he steps into this global role, Shah will be required to resign from his position as BCCI Secretary, a role he has held since 2019.
The BCCI’s general assembly meeting, scheduled for next month or October, is when Shah is expected to submit his resignation. His appointment as ICC Chairman will only take effect after he relinquishes his duties as BCCI Secretary. Currently, Shah is the head of the ICC’s powerful Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee, a position he has held since 2022.
Jay Shah joins an esteemed list of Indians who have previously held the ICC’s top position, including Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N. Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar. As for his successor as BCCI Secretary, several names are in contention, with media reports suggesting Rohan Jaitley, son of the late BJP leader Arun Jaitley, as a strong candidate.
Global Recognition for Cricket Through the Olympics
Expressing his gratitude upon his election, Jay Shah said, “I am honored to be elected as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council. I am committed to working with the ICC team and its members to promote cricket worldwide. At this moment, it is crucial to further the growth of various formats of cricket.”
Shah also discussed his vision for integrating new technologies into cricket and expanding the reach of events like the World Cup to global markets. “I will work towards bringing new technologies into cricket and will strive to take major events like the World Cup to global markets,” Shah added.
Highlighting his plans to give cricket global recognition, Shah emphasized the significance of cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Olympics. “The inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Olympics is a significant achievement. We will use the Olympics to give cricket a global identity and make it accessible to more countries,” he said.
Jay Shah’s leadership marks a new era for cricket, with a focus on innovation, global outreach, and the integration of cricket into the broader international sporting community.
