Kamran Akmal: Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary and head of the Asian Cricket Council, caused a stir when he said that the BCCI will not send Team India to Pakistan to compete in the 2023 Asia Cup. Numerous responses, including that of the late captain Shahid Afridi, have emerged from Pakistan in response to this statement. He said that Shah’s remark, made right before a T20 World Cup match between two nations, was at an inopportune time.
In response to Shah’s remarks, the PCB stated that if India didn’t visit Pakistan, they could as well boycott the ODI World Cup 2023, which is slated to take place in India. Following these heated responses from Pakistan, several ex-Cricketers from Pakistan, including Younis Khan and Kamran Akmal, voiced their responses.
Jay Shah, according to Younis, has fired a shot with this remark. He believes that by responding to Jay Shah’s remarks so strongly, PCB did the right thing. The BCCI will be affected in a similar way to how New Zealand and England were.”I think Jay Shah should not have said that but since the bullet has been fired I would ask the PCB to take a firm stance on this issue, just like we did in the past [after New Zealand called off Pakistan’s tour at the eleventh hour] and as you know those teams have begun to tour the country,” said Younis.
“But if they [BCCI] decide to stick with their decision then it should not matter to us if the Indian team does not participate in Asia Cup and we should consider not travelling to India for the ODI World Cup the following year, nor we should agree to host Asia Cup at a neutral venue,” he added.
Akmal, a former Pakistani batter and wicketkeeper, said Shah’s comment was surprising and that he should leave politics to his rivals and avoid bringing it up in sporting events.
“Asia Cup should only be hosted in Pakistan and if that does not happen then Pakistan should not play against India at any level, be it ICC events’ matches, Asia Cup matches, or even their match on October 23,” he further said.
