Kane Williamson: During Tuesday’s England vs. New Zealand Super 12 match in the T20 World Cup 2022, a “embarrassing” instance broke out. Kane Williamson, the captain of New Zealand, came under fire for allegedly “cheating” after he claimed a catch after the ball had plainly bounced out of his hands and into the ground before he gripped it to his chest and tried to convince the umpires that he had caught it cleanly.
Kane Williamson, the captain of New Zealand, is regarded as one of the best cricket players in the world. Williamson is praised for his sportsmanship by all, in addition to his prowess as a batter and captain.
Skipper had made a fantastic dive to collect a catch off Mitchell Santner’s bowling at the extra cover area on the third delivery of the fifth over of England’s innings. Jos Buttler, the captain of England, played the shot, and it would have been a major wicket. However, the third umpire rejected the appeal because the ball had already hit the ground and Williamson had already fallen after completing the catch.
Williamson then apologised to Buttler for first claiming the catch, being the gentleman that he is. Similar circumstances occurred during the India vs. Pakistan game when Ravichandran Ashwin claimed to have caught Shan Masood in midair but the third umpire disallowed it.
Buttler went on to score 73 runs off 47 balls helping his team to register a score of 179/6 in 20 overs. Team England later won the match by 20 runs, keeping their hopes of playing the semi final alive.
