KL Rahul: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squads for the remaining two Test matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the three-match ODI series against Australia on Sunday, February 19. The ODI squad includes notable players such as Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and KL Rahul, while the Test squad remains unchanged from the first two matches.
Why was KL Rahul not chosen as vice-captain?
However, the BCCI removed KL Rahul from his position as vice-captain of the Indian Test team due to his lack of performance with the bat in the first two Tests. Rahul’s total score for the ongoing Test series is 38 runs in three innings. Reports suggest that the team management recommended that Rahul be relieved of his leadership duties to allow him to focus on his batting.
A source was quoted saying, “It was decided not to name any vice-captain. Instead, the power was given to Rohit Sharma. Who will lead the side in case he has to leave the field is Rohit Sharma’s call.”
In an interesting development, Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has been entrusted with the responsibility of selecting the replacement for KL Rahul, who is likely to be dropped from the third Test. According to sources, it is believed that young opener Shubman Gill may be given an opportunity to showcase his skills in the Indore Test.
KL Rahul’s stellar run in past
Despite Rahul’s lack of form in the current series, his previous impressive performances, including his centuries at Lord’s and Centurion in 2021, have not been forgotten by the team’s captain and head coach, Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid, respectively. It is believed that these past accomplishments are the reason why the duo is still considering the right-handed batsman for the team.
