Kolkata Police Bust Mobile Betting Racket During India-Pakistan Asia Cup Match

In a significant operation, the Kolkata Police apprehended two individuals, Satyendra Yadav (29) and Sumit Singh (33), for orchestrating a mobile betting racket inside a moving vehicle during the highly anticipated Asia Cup match between India and Pakistan. The arrests were made under Section 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code, in addition to relevant sections of the West Bengal Gambling and Prize Competitions Act, 1957.

Law enforcement authorities received a tip-off about the illegal cricket betting operation

The law enforcement authorities received a tip-off about the illegal cricket betting operation taking place within the city of Kolkata, but what set this operation apart was its mobile and on-the-move nature. The perpetrators had ditched conventional methods and opted for a mobile setup, presumably to elude authorities more effectively.

A vigilant team from the Kolkata Police discreetly trailed a suspicious-looking vehicle, eventually intercepting it near Waterloo Street. Upon searching the car, the police uncovered three mobile phones and various other incriminating items, leading to the immediate arrest of Yadav and Singh. Furthermore, the vehicle utilized for their illicit activities was also impounded by the police.

The unfortunate twist to this cricketing saga is that the India-Pakistan match in question was ultimately abandoned due to heavy rainfall. Consequently, both teams shared points, but Pakistan secured a place in the Super 4 round thanks to their earlier victory over Nepal in the 2023 Asia Cup’s opening match on August 30.
