La Liga: Barcelona’s 1-0 victory away at Atletico Madrid maintained a three-point advantage over Real Madrid at the top of La Liga. Midway through the first half, Barca took the lead thanks to a goal from Ousmane Dembele following strong play by Pedri and Gavi. Moments before Ronald Araujo cleared off the line to prevent Antoine Griezmann, tempers flared in the dying seconds, as both Barca’s Ferran Torres and Atletico defender Stefan Savic were seen fighting.
On Saturday, Madrid suffered its second league defeat of the year when it was defeated 2-1 by Villarreal. With a 14-point deficit to the lead, Atlético plummeted to fifth place. Barcelona hung on for their first league victory of the year after Dembele’s first-half goal.

In the 22nd minute, Dembélé converted a close-range low shot after Gavi Páez had set him up. Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets said, “We knew it was going to be tough to win here, but after Madrid lost points against Villarreal we had to take advantage of the opportunity.”
Tough win for Barcelona
Barcelona was without Lewandowski since the striker from Poland started serving a three-game suspension from before the World Cup break. Lewandowski leads the league in goals scored with 13 goals. Late last year, when the punishment had been temporarily removed, he played Espanyol, but this week, it was returned to prevent him from participating.
Ansu Fati was placed in Lewandowski’s place at the beginning by Barcelona coach Xavi. When Barcelona faced Intercity in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday, Fati had came off the bench to score the game-winning goal in extra time and help Barcelona avoid elimination. Atlético’s forward Antoine Griezmann missed a handful of wonderful chances to draw the score at the Metropolitano stadium in the Spanish capital.
